  1. Technique used in printing to reproduce the
  2. full range of tones in a photograph or other
  3. illustration. The intensity of the printed
  4. colour is varied from full strength to the
  5. lightest shades, even if one colour of ink is
  6. used. The picture to be reproduced is
  7. photographed through a screen ruled with a
  8. rectangular mesh of fine lines, which breaks
  9. up the tones of the original into areas of
  10. dots that vary in frequency according to the
  11. intensity of the tone. In the darker areas
  12. the dots run together; in the lighter areas
  13. they have more space between them. Colour
  14. pictures are broken down into a pattern of
  15. dots in the same way, the original being
  16. photographed through a number of colour
  17. filters. The process is known as colour
  18. separation. Plates made from the separations
  19. are then printed in sequence, yellow, magenta
  20. (blue-red), cyan (blue-green) and black,
  21. which combine to give the full colour range
